Naseema McElroy: [00:00:00] All right, Nurses on Fire. I'm super honored to be joined today by Ms. Rosa Pinto Butterman. Hey Rosa.
Rosa Butterman: [00:00:09] Hi, how are you?
Naseema McElroy: [00:00:11] Excellent. Thank you for asking. And, I am really, Happy to be able to share your story with other nurses, because I just feel like there's infinite possibility and I love your story and let's just hop right into it.
So let's talk about your journey into nursing. so how did you become a nurse? how did you get inspired into nursing?
Rosa Butterman: [00:00:34] Absolutely. Well, thank you so much again for having me. And, it tends to how I got started into journey, my journey into nursing. Actually, my grandmother is a retired nurse and she used to do, you know, let's take your daughter to work day, even though I was her granddaughter, I used to go with that and it was so fun and I just don't remember.
I loved going with her. I remember I went every year with her for a few years in a row, and I really remember that as a kid and my childhood. And, also just growing up, I felt like it really matched my personality. I'm someone that's really a giver and not a taker. And I just love giving back and caring for others.
So I felt as I got older, it really matched my personality. So I started. Looking into different schools in my area. And I was so happy when I finally got into nursing. I started my clinicals. It was really a good fit for me. I felt.
Naseema McElroy: [00:01:26] Okay. So you went straight into nursing out of after college or after high school.
Rosa Butterman: [00:01:32] Actually I studied psychology first, so I got a bachelor's in psych first. Yes. And I was not sure what I wanted to do at that time. And I was kind of thinking, well, maybe I should become a pharmacist, to be honest. And I was like, I'm going to do that. And then I became a pharmacy tech actually, when I was working and I got my bachelor's in psychology and I just like, it was.
Not for me. And I'm someone also that likes to be up in like on my feet and just keep that and keep going. That's just how I am, but I feel like it was kind of stagnant. Even. I loved the work that they did. I felt like it didn't match just me as a whole. So then I started thinking back to those moments in my childhood and I was like, well, something kind of along the same lines in healthcare.
And I thought about nursing, but by that point I was already kind of. Far along into my psychology degree. So then I ended up going back to school to become a nurse.
Naseema McElroy: [00:02:29] Yeah. And the reason why I asked you that is because most people that I have on nursing and it's kind of a pivot, even me, I didn't go into nursing until after I had a master's degree.
We always think our journeys are so unique, but there's so many similarities in that journey. And then there's a lot of second career nurses. So I think that's pretty cool. So you got into nursing finally. And so, talk to me about your nursing career.
Rosa Butterman: [00:02:52] So once I finally did get into nursing, throughout nursing school, I was working at a local hospital and in that hospital, I worked as a nurses aid and I was really studying there and going to my clinicals right from work and really getting a feel for what a bedside nurse did.
And I really, really loved it. And I ended up working on a unit that was similar to the one I worked at. As a nurses aid. So it was a telemetry unit. we primarily had patients that have heart failure stroke, but we took all types of patients. It was a step down unit from the ICU. So, I really loved it.
I learned in immense immense amount of knowledge. So I'm really grateful for that experience.
Naseema McElroy: [00:03:33] Yeah. So. You had a transition though recently, where you decided to take another path, walk us through that.
Rosa Butterman: [00:03:42] Yes. So recently I just, well, I'm 10 months postpartum and I had a baby boy and I was out on maternity leave until about may and I'm in New York.
And well, this pandemic is global, but, it was one of the, you know, the hot spots and I was on. My maternity leave. I had so much time to reflect, and I was just thinking about my journey as a bedside nurse and just thinking about what my long-term goals really are. Even when I became a nurse. And I really felt like I always wanted to have my own business.
So during that time, I really was trying to figure out all the pieces and put all the blocks I needed together to launch my own business. And that's how nurse mompreneur formed. I offer one-on-one health coaching. And as of recently, I just launched a program, "The Stat Method Course", that's basically for nurses and busy mothers who want to get back into their fitness goals and they want help on their journey.
They feel unmotivated and they feel I'm inspired. You know, we're all at home. The gyms are closed and I thought it was a really great way and incentive to get women together to really. Build their immune systems up and motivate one another and just be there for each other.
Naseema McElroy: [00:05:01] So have you personally always been into like health and wellness and fitness?
Rosa Butterman: [00:05:06] Yes. I actually have always been into health and wellness. I was mostly into yoga. Yoga was my, I don't know if you've ever tried Bikram yoga, but I did that 300 days in a row actually, once. Yeah, I kept, I did one challenge that was three days and I was like, Oh, you got to keep doing this. Cause I feel great.
So, That's I think that was about eight years ago and I always did cardio. I loved outdoor runs. I loved running at the park near my house, and I just love mostly about working out. I love the way it made you feel. And that's always what I went back to. Am I always aspired to work out and that's kind of how I started my program too, because I want it to feel.
Energized. And I want it to feel fueled again, and I want to feel like myself, especially postpartum. And so I started thinking, how can I help other women that experienced the same things that can do them emotional eating? I had a bad day, so I'm like, I'm just going to drink soda. I'm just going to eat everything inside.
And I felt crummy and. I also had high blood pressure after I had my son. And it was a big incentive for me to get my blood pressure down because I didn't like the admit medication, any feel I felt so dizzy. I said to myself, no, I really have to get this under control. So I finally committed to myself and I said, I'm going to go back to working.
I have to take one day at a time. I'm going to try to reach my goal where I can not just, Oh, I'm going to lose weight, but actually make progress towards my actual overall health and wellbeing. So that's what I, that's what I did with my program. And I did this same thing in my own life, so I'm very proud of it.
I'm very happy to share it without any.
Naseema McElroy: [00:06:50] So why the focus on moms in particular, why do you think that was important?
Rosa Butterman: [00:06:55] Well, I think that that one is a mega mega mega important, but we are always caring for other people, and , we're just not on the list where, or we're last if anything, and we just forget about ourselves.
And I think that self love self care is so important, especially in today's time. And in general. Always remember, to carve that time out for yourself throughout the day, even if it's just 30 minutes. And that's what I do in my life every day, even if it's just a 30 minute workout, that's what I do. Even if I can only do 20 minutes, I say, I have 20 minutes to do it today.
And even though it's not what I wanted, that's what I'm going to work with because something is better than nothing.
Naseema McElroy: [00:07:29] Exactly. Exactly. It's all about like checking those boxes. Like, either you did it or you didn't and you can do it consistently. It's about those consistent gains, but I love what you said.
Like, as, as a moms, we always put ourselves last and then as a nurse and a mom, it's like a double whammy that we always put other people in front of. Our needs and we don't put our needs first. And so, yes, it's super important. Especially taking care of yourself. Self care is where it's at. So I love what you're doing.
So what encouraged you to kind of step away from the bedside and start this business?
Rosa Butterman: [00:08:18] I think the biggest thing that encouraged me to step away from the bedside is that I really just wanted to be in a position where I can create my own hours, that I can be there for my son and that I can really have a business of my dreams that really flourishes and.
I think that for me, when I first started putting all the pieces together, those are big incentives, big wins for me that I felt that I really wanted to embark on this journey, even though it was challenging at times, I still felt I. Really wants to do. And I was so inspired by seeing other nurses doing the same thing.
And I said, you know, I'm going to give it my best shot and do the best I can because I, this one of my dreams. So I really I'm really proud of what I've done. And I'm so happy that I get to share my story on here with you. So.
Naseema McElroy: [00:09:09] Well, I appreciate you being here. So talk more about your program. what services do you offer and what results can people get from being enrolled in your program?
Rosa Butterman: [00:09:20] Sure. So my program is a four week course and it is. Compiled into group coaching. And so everyone that enrolls is in a group and they're typically coached throughout these four weeks and we cover nutrition aspects.
We covered sample meal plans. We have a virtual fitness studio that you'll have access to within the courts. So every day you're going to have different workouts that you're going to do, but they're. Well accumulated with moms and nurses in mind and their busy schedules. So they're all under 30 minutes or everything that I've done, myself, everything that I timed myself.
So things that they can execute very quickly in their house without workout equipment, even if they don't have that, if you do have it, that's great, but you don't necessarily need it to participate. And as we talked about how busy just being a nurse and motherhood can be, I partnered with the brand based meal subscription services.

Can stay fit during the holidays. Not I gonna wait till January 1st to get healthy. And so that's one of the things that inspired me.
Naseema McElroy: [00:11:36] Yes. I like that. That is towards the end of the year, get a headstart on those new year's resolutions. But also, yes, it is so hard to stay fit during the holidays.
