TRANSCRIPT:
Naseema McElroy: 00:22 Hey everyone, hope you had a Merry Christmas. So today, I am going to bring you an episode raw and uncut and if you are missing the voice of my usual side kick. She is sleeping. We are just leaving my grandfather's house, celebrating Christmas. You'll hear the baby in the background as I think she is currently taking a poop and making it a little bit of extra noises. But like I said, this is raw and I cut because I just wanted to kind of give you a summary episode on how this year is going and kind of overview of some of my goals for the next year and the next decade. So, if you are joining me when this episode drops on December 26, the day after Christmas, I am launching a Mo money challenge and that's just a five day email and live challenge in the Financially Intentional Facebook group where I just talk about some strategies to enter into 2020 right.
Naseema McElroy: 01:31 And so, if you're interested in joining that challenge, it's totally free. You can join me at financiallyintentional.com/mo-money1. So again, if you want to enter the Mo Money Challenge and get your money right for 2020, you can join me for free at financiallyintentional.com/mo-money1. All right, so I just want to give you an overview of kind of my 2019 and all that entailed. But actually I want to go back to 2018 because this time, December 2018, I was on bed rest kind of, sort of, you know, always work in new year's eve. That's my holiday to work. And when I was on my way to go to work. If you guys recall last year, I was living in Reno, but I worked in Fremont in California in the San Francisco Bay area, which is about a three-hour drive and at that time, I was too pregnant to fly, so I was going to drive and I was doing a hospital tour and was having contractions during the tour, so decided to get checked and I was too far dilated at 38 weeks to go over the mountain to go to work.
Naseema McElroy: 02:50 So I was on bed rest expecting to have a baby that wasn't due until January 6 and if you guys have been following me, you also know that my baby was born on new year's Eve. So during this time last year, for the first time in my life, did not spend Christmas with my family and mom was home. Actually, we played monopoly most of the day, which was really nice. But all in all, it was a pretty different Christmas. So coming into 2019, I had a brand new baby. I was on maternity leave. I went back to work pretty early because I had acquired a lot of debt in building my business and I wasn't comfortable with that debt. And so I was like, Ooh, I need to go back to work. So I could've stayed on maternity leave longer, but I actually went back to work after six weeks of maternity leave, which you know, wasn't the best decision for me mentally and physically.
Naseema McElroy: 03:49 So yeah. And then later I ended up having a surgery where I subsequently lost an ovary and that also caused me to be on a downward spiral. So this post-pregnancy, this delivery after having my second daughter has been really trying. And so a lot of the goals that I had for the business as far as growth, as far as the revenue I would bring in did not necessarily manifest itself because I was basically trying to stay afloat. All in all, it was a beautiful year. I cannot be more blessed by having wonderful daughters, a wonderful partner, super supportive. We moved back to Oakland. I'm very close to my grandfather, staying in a relatively affordable place, enjoying some house hacking, but 2019 has been a great year for me and Financially Intentional. I continue to grow in the business even though it may not be at the pace that I expected it to.
Naseema McElroy: 04:54 I was super blessed to be featured in Forbes in October and I continue to get a lot of press and a lot of media and other podcasts and other outlets reaching out to me to share my story on their platform and so I am so, so, so grateful for all the opportunities but, and this is the most important thing. Also continue to hear from you guys about how much just hearing my story has inspired you. The most important thing I was able to do despite it all and believe me, I had a lot of barriers in my way was I was able to start the Nurses on Fire Podcast and I thought this was going to be super challenging and super cumbersome, but it has been definitely a passion project that has brought me so much joy and the feedback that you guys are giving me has been phenomenal and has truly warmed my heart and trust and believe I will be here in 2020 bringing you even more.
Naseema McElroy: 06:01 So yes, I will be bringing you even more, and this is my announcement you guys, in 2020 we are going to two episodes a week. We will be having Monday episodes which will feature a recording from my live episode, which I do with Jason Hamilton, who was a certified financial planner. It's called Nurse Your Wealth and we do those episodes live every Monday. If we don't go live every Monday we'll let you know but, but we go live every Monday at 10:00 AM Pacific Time to answer specific questions that you have. So, I will drop the link in the show notes or if you guys are listening on different podcast players, you can click the see more section and there's always going to be links to the things that I've featured in the episodes that I talk about. Well, I'll drop the link. If you guys have any questions, specific questions about maximizing retirement accounts, anything that has to do with your finances. If you want to do a case study, we can do that and go in depth and look at your finances and see areas you can better optimize. But this is just a great opportunity for me to really get a pulse on what's going on in the nursing community so that we can serve you better. And it's just been great going back and forth with Jason. He has, oh a wealth of experience and you know, he's originally from the Bay area as well and you know, had very interesting background and we'll talk about that more in our episodes, but I think you guys are really gonna love him. Really gonna relate to him. So on Mondays we'll be having those recordings from the live episodes on the podcast and then on every Thursday we'll continue to have our interview or solo episodes in the current format that they're in.
Naseema McElroy: 07:53 So, super excited to transition into 2020 with you guys and just to give you an overview on the things that I want to accomplish over the next decade. So you guys, if I look back on all the things that has happened to me and I encourage you to also reflect on the last decade of your life, things have changed in a major way and I can never imagine that I could be here. I couldn't even imagine that I would have paid off my debt. I couldn't imagine that I would've had two kids like things. I mean like the amount of things that I have gone through, man, when I just look year by year have been really, really dynamic. And so, it's hard for me to go into 2020 making predictions about what I want to do for the next 30 years. But let me tell you the next 10 years I feel are going to be super promising for me, my business, my kids, my family, and I am super excited to share this journey with you guys.
Naseema McElroy: 09:03 So as like a general overview, these are some things that are super important to me. I want to make sure that I am working on a FI plus goal and to me that means I have enough money to live off of without having to work in the next decade. And then some, I don't ever plan on stop being work in like every capacity. I might stop nursing for a short period of time. I don't really intend to stop Financially Intentional, but I might not have to be as hands on as I am, but I always probably be doing something that will be generating income. And so, that's my goal over the next decade. I definitely want to be financially independent plus, and that means for me and my family that I would have to have at least a couple million dollars in the bank. And while I'm going on this journey, I really want to take as many of you as possible with me. So, I'm dedicated to bringing least a hundred other of my financial intentionals with me along on this journey. And so those are some things that I'll be working on. So, stay tuned to learn more about opportunities with working with me to get to your million dollars in the next decade. I also am super passionate about world schooling. I really want to, you know, take my kids out the country and have them be educated in another place and really dive deep into the food and the culture of other areas. And so that's something that I'm going to be exploring over the next 10 years. We are looking into doing more real estate investing in the next 10 years and hopefully you'll see some of that in the next year or so to come. So stay tuned for that. I really am looking forward to taking Financially Intentional and Nurses on Fire and making that into a global brand.
Naseema McElroy: 11:06 We have listeners and I have people in my groups from all across the country, but to do more speaking engagements and stuff across the world, it would be epic and that's something that I totally feel like it's something that's attainable in the next 10 years, but I truly want to be the face of personal finance in general. I mean like Dave Ramsey's out there. I feel like it's about time that we kind of mix it up a little bit, but I specifically would love to be the face of personal finance for nurses. So, there's a lot of opportunities coming my way to grow the brand, to spread awareness and just let other nurses and people out there know what's possible in general. So, I want to take this time to really say thank you. Thank you. Thank you so much for everyone who has been rocking with me since day one.
Naseema McElroy: 12:07 Everyone who is new to the podcast, I appreciate each and every one of you and everybody in between. The feedback like I said earlier, that I have perceived from this podcast has really touched my heart and every time I hear that somebody has benefited or learned something new from the things that I've shared you guys, this is why I do it and so I am truly, truly grateful for each and every one of you. I hope you guys had a Merry Christmas. I hope that you enjoy your new year. I will be cooking gumbo for my daughter's birthday birthday to bring in the new gear at my grandfather's house as he is 91 and I feel like our time together is growing shorter, but if you guys didn't know a little bit about me, you know that he is one of my favorite people in the world, so I'm going to cherish this time with him. I again appreciate each and every one of you guys. Thank you. Thank you so much for rocking with me. Thank you for listening to this episode. Make sure you always reach out. Tag me on all the socials, DM me. Hit me up for any questions. I am here for you. This is what I'm about. Let me know if you want to be a guest on the podcast. Happy 2020! I hope you guys enjoyed your holiday and I hope you have a dynamic and spectacular and financially independent next 10 years. Peace y'all.
